Denmark Erects Statue To One Of Three ‘Rebel Queens’ Who Led Fiery Revolt Against Danish Colonialism
A 23-foot tall statute erected in Denmark honors one of three women who were instrumental in a violent rebellion that took place in 1878 on St. Croix in which houses, sugar mills, sugar fields, and over half the city of Frederiksted was burned down. The rebellion was caused by a failure to implement new labor laws. The statute depicts Queen Mary aka Mary Thomas, one of the leaders of the rebellion.
