The Context of White Supremacy hosts the sixth study session on Frantz Fanon’s 1961 book, The Wretched of the Earth. Born in Martinique in 1925, Fanon is an internationally celebrated psychiatrist who committed his 36 years of life to eradicating White dominion. He fought for Algerian independence from French colonial oppression and black liberation world wide. Fanon also authored Black Skin, White Mask, which is a psychoanalysis of the perversions and neurosis that drives the sexual liaisons between Whites and black people. Interestingly, Fanon himself married a White woman. The writer and psychiatrist died from leukemia the same year The Wretched of the Earth was published. Our last session examined the mythical notion of African unity. Fanon noted years of conditioned anti-blackness made it so that black people across the continent easily quarreled and brawled with each other even after the Whites physically exited. He also emphasized how Whites deprived black people of education, so they were largely ill-informed and unable to perform many of the essential duties to sustain their independence. Unfortunately, Fanon devotes a substantial amount of the text to criticizing how other black people respond to White Terrorism. He seems especially dissatisfied with the so called black middle class.
