The Context of White Supremacy hosts the debut study session on Gil Scott-Heron’s memoir, The Last Holiday. A poet, author, musician and victim of Racism, Scott-Heron passed away in 2011. He composed an array of music that directly address black lives and how the System of White Supremacy terrorizes black people. Iconic selections like “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” encourage many to list Scott-Heron as one of the founders of hip-hop music. We begin his 2012 biography, which details his childhood in the South and his migration to New York. One of the core motivations for writing this book is to describe his effort to help erect a federal holiday in honor of late activist and minister Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scott-Heron describes how musical genius Stevie Wonder was also a fierce advocate to officially recognize Dr. King’s sacrifice. Since we just concluded the late Coretta Scott King autobiography, where she chronicles her own labor to secure a holiday for her slain husband. We’ll compare this text to other autobiographies covered on the book club – Maya Angelou, Assata Shakur, Malcolm X.
