The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Stephen Jimenez. A writer, author and gay male, Mr. Jimenez investigated the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard. Shepard was a White male college student who was brutally murdered by Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. McKinney and Henderson were convicted and both received life sentences without possibility for parole. Shepard’s death was originally reported – and continues to be discussed – as a barbaric “hate crime,” his life taken sole because he was gay. The federal “Hate Crime” bill is named in honor of him. Jimenez’s book, The Book Of Matt, challenges this conclusion with more than a decade of research. He submits that many people who knew Shepard were aware that he had a serious drug problem; some even allege that he also trafficked narcotics. Jimenez also details that Shepard knew one of his assailants, McKinney – who was also a drug addict and distributor. The book’s main theory is that Shepard was not killed because he was gay, and that this murder was not a “hate crime.” Jimenez theorizes that Wyoming’s violent methamphetamine trade was the primary contributor to Shepard’s murder.
