The Context of White Supremacy hosts the nineth study session on Stephen Kantrowitz’s, Ben Tillman And The Reconstruction of White Supremacy. Benjamin “Pitchfork” Tillman is one of South Carolina’s most esteemed sons. He’s a former governor, US senator, co-founder of Clemson University and Winthrop University, and a devoted White Supremacist. He reminisced about his collusion in the murder and torture of black citizens and inspired White Supremacist legal codes across the country. The June 17th Terrorist attack on Mother Emanuel A.M.E. spurred interest in South Carolina Racism. Mr. Kantrowitz is aware that we’re investigating his biography and emailed Gus his most recent essay on Mr. Tillman. His assessment of Tillman’s career as a South Carolina politician is that, “Tillman bent over backwards to make sure his policies benefited as few African Americans as possible.” This helps clarify why a few Confederate flags may be gone, but Tillman monuments still litter South Carolina. Last week’s installment stressed Tillman relentless efforts to sabotage and obstruct black education and voting. Large numbers of Racist South Carolinians opposed and lamented the threat of educated, voting black citizens. Tillman also expressed his disgust for black females and their immoral, promiscuous character. This is the South Carolina heritage that gave birth to Dylann Roof.
