The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 9th study session on Jeffrey Toobin’s The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson. This 1996 New York Times bestseller enjoyed two different waves of success. It was critically acclaimed during the initial mid-90’s publication and enjoyed re-newed success following the critically acclaimed and widely adored 2016 FX miniseries – which is based on Toobin’s work. Toobin compiled thirty years of journalism, spawned from his coverage of the Simpson trial. He wrote beloved books on the Supreme Court and authored a scathing indictment of President Donald J. Trump. Things were triumphant until the year of the rona. While participating in a live Zoom conference with prominent White journalists, Toobin brandished his penis and began masturbating. He was initially suspended by the New Yorker. After an investigation, Toobin was terminated. We’ll keep this in mind while reading his account of the most well documented, most watched court trial of all time. Last week’s installment described the addition of Christopher Darden, a black male, to the prosecution. Toobin, and nearly everyone else White and non-white who watched or was involved with the case, concluded that the prosecution needed to add a black person to their team to help sway the predominantly black female jury. The trial officially begins in January of 1995. The prosecution describes this as a domestic violence case that ended in murder. 911 operator Sharyn Gilbert, whom Toobin describes as a “rotund and good-natured black woman,” testifies about Nicole’s frantic call for help. Former LAPD officer Ronald Shipp testified that OJ beat his former wife. In fact, Shipp, who Toobin brands a Simpson “toady,” says he felt guilty for not doing more to help Nicole. He also testifies to hearing O.J. confess to having dreams of killing Nicole. Judge Ito initially allows this testimony… only to later change his mind.
