The Context of White Supremacy hosts the sixth study session on Angie Thomas’s historically popular young adult novel, The Hate U Give. Allegedly inspired by the 2009 police slaying of Oscar Grant, Thomas’s work “debuted at the top of The New York Times’s Young Adult best-seller list, and has drawn ecstatic praise from critics, librarians, book sellers and prominent young-adult novelists,” says The Times’s Alexandra Alter. After more than a year, The Hate U Give remains cemented on The Times’s bestseller list and is being formatted for a major motion picture starring The Hunger Games’s Amandla Stenberg. Last week’s session offered another healthy heap of anti-blackness. Starr’s father Maverick, supposedly the author’s favorite character, finally became aware that his daughter is in an “interracial relationship” with a White kid. Minutes after meeting Starr’s father for the first time, Chris begins holding hands with and kissing Starr. For some readers, the scene parallel plantation era slavery, when enslaved blacks were forced to helplessly spectate while White brutes sexually violated their loved ones. Chris the White boy is awarded points for continuing to grip Starr’s hand even when her father enters the room. As opposed to being a book for the Black Lives Matter generation, the text is more of a thinly veiled promotion for “interracial dating” for teens.
