• Our Rider Of The 21st Century Underground Railroad is Lawrence McKinney who in 1978 was convicted by a Memphis jury of raping a woman during a burglary. The victim identified McKinney as one of two men who attacked her and he was sentenced to 115 years for the deed. He spent 31 years and nine months behind bars but was declared innocent in 2008 after a thorough examination of DNA evidence cleared him. McKinney was released in 2009, but he was given only $75 for his trouble. He is now seeking restitution.
• Our Abolitionist in profile this week is Henry Highland Garnet who was born in captivity in Maryland in 1815. When he was nine, his family secured their freedom via the Underground Railroad. Garnet is perhaps most famous for his radical speech of 1843, “An Address to the Slaves of the USA.” In this speech, Garnet speaks directly to those enslaved, urging them to rebel against their masters.
