Sanders backs Obama’s right to move on SCOTUS appointment
By Scotty Reid – As expected the Republicans are vowing to block any nomination from President Obama to fill the empty seat on the highest court of law in the United States following the death of the right wing demagogue U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia who was reportedly found dead while out on a hunting trip in Texas.
President Obama has issued a statement that his administration as per the US Constitution, will put forth a nominee and expect that person to get an up or down vote in the US Senate.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a republican from Kentucky has vowed to block any nomination no matter who it is and plans to make it the appointment a referendum in the 2016 general elections.
Two sitting US Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, both currently seeking the GOP presidential nomination, echoed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s and support his intent to use his position in the Senate to block any appointment by President Obama.
Rubio stated that the appointment should be decided by the voters in the upcoming 2016 elections by who they select as President but isn’t that exactly why some voters selected Obama again in 2012, to appoint members to the SCOTUS?
Senator Bernie Sanders who is also currently running his own campaign to succeed President Obama, said his colleagues in the Senate would be wrong to block the confirmation of a nominee by the President.
“I just don’t think it looks good that for very overtly political reasons that the Republicans would deny this president the right to exercise his constitutional responsibility, which is to appoint members to the Supreme Court,” Sanders said on ABC’s “This Week.”
However, civil rights activists, abolitionists, affirmative action and reparations advocates should not have any high hopes of the Obama administration nominating a progressive judge with friendly views on those issues as they are more likely to nominate a moderate right-leaning judge in capitulation to Republicans just to get it through the Senate.
