Former LAPD cop sentenced to three years in killing of Alesia Thomas
Former LAPD Officer Mary O’Callaghan was captured on film threatening and assaulting a handcuffed Alesia Thomas, the 35-year-old mother who lost consciousness in the back seat of the patrol car and died soon after. O’Callaghan was seen striking Thomas in her throat with an open hand and kicking her in the crotch. Some activists feel that O’Callaghan was undercharged and in the very least should have been charged with involuntary manslaughter instead of just the charge of assault under color of authority.
O’Callaghan was convicted in a jury trial on June 5, 2015. Today she was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 3 years in prison.
