The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Richard Sugg live from the United Kingdom. Dr. Sugg is a staff member in the Department of English at Durham University in Durham City. His research interests include literature and medicine and Renaissance studies. We’ll discuss his 2011 publication, Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires: the History of Corpse Medicine from the Renaissance to the Victorians. Dr. Sugg categorizes this study as “dirty history”. He suggests that most people are not aware of the widespread practice of consuming human flesh, blood, and bones. “Corpse Medicine” involved looting dead bodies from Egypt, picking over the latest crop of executed men and even consuming the blood of vanquished foes. Dr. Sugg writes that the rise of Christianity did not squash the White appetite for flesh. We’ll ask him to explain how this practice continues to be manifest in 21st century White culture (The Walking Dead). We’ll also ask him to contrast how Whites have consistently branded black people and other non-whites as savage cannibals, when their own record is bloated with this behavior – Jeffrey Dahmer and beyond.
