The Context of White Supremacy hosts the debut study session on legendary poet, author, scholar, mother, sexual abuse survivor and Victim of White Supremacy Dr. Maya Angelou. Dr. Angelou transitioned in May of 2014. We felt duty-bound to recognize her literary efforts to counter the System of Racism. We’ll explore her 1969 autobiographical novel, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. The text candidly examines Racism, the so called Civil Rights Movement and sexual abuse. It’s reported that James Baldwin encouraged Dr. Angelou to write this book – which ultimately blossomed into a seven-volume series. We’ll be on the look out for the sway of Christianity/White Jesus as well as why many White people seem to adore and champion this text. This installment coincides with the birthday of former South African President, Nelson Mandela.
