In light of new "Extraordinary Event" ordinances that will be implemented before and during the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, the Coalition to March on Wall Street South is taking steps to protect the civil rights of people coming to it's activities from September 1st - 6th.
Peter Gilbert is a member of the National Lawyers Guild and co-chair of the March on Wall St South legal working group. In a phone interview with Press TV's U.S. Desk on Wednesday he expressed his concerns.
He said, "Consistently at every large demonstration that has been held against the bourgeois parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, there is one group that always comes that threatens the safety of everyone and comes with the intention of initiating violence, and that is the police. And what we have seen at the Democratic National Conventions four years ago in Denver and eight years ago in Boston and twelve years ago in Los Angeles as well as the Republican Conventions is that the police frequently attack demonstrators with teargas, with pepper spray and with rubber bullets and also tend to arrest large numbers of demonstrators."
Gilbert concluded, "We know that the city of Charlotte has bought an insurance policy to ensure itself against lawsuits based upon excessive force or wrongful arrests or false imprisonment and they have constructed new jails, holding facilities outside of their regular jail and so we expect they are showing they are preparing once again to unconstitutionally and illegally arrest and detain people who are exercising their first amendment rights."
"We are concerned about the fear of police violence. Some of the Charlotte police were present in Chicago at the demonstrations against NATO earlier in the summer and there was violence against demonstrators there and so we believe we have good reason to believe that the police may violate the rights of the demonstrators and we want everyone to be ... and have as much information as possible so that they can protect themselves and express their concerns.

The inquiry into the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya by conservatives to this point has been little more than an expression of white supremacy and political theater. What the inquiry is saying is that only "American" lives matter and not the lives of the thousands killed in Libya or those that are still being killed and displaced from their homes due to ethnic cleansing by forces backed by the United States. The…
