Many of the prophetic words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an icon and legend, resound more relevant today than yesterday. When I think about what’s going on in our country, a profound statement by Dr. King comes to mind - “God has a way of standing before the nations with justice and it seems I can hear God saying to America, you are too arrogant ….” This statement bears truth as we are fighting four wars abroad while continuing to ignore the wars right here at home.

The America of the people, for the people and by the people seems to have been taken over by big corporations that are controlling the political, judicial and media strings of this country. Think about it! Our economy is still on life support thanks to the “Too Big to Fail” financial corporations. Millions are still unemployed, losing their homes while many of those responsible for this horrific crisis continue to earn million dollar salaries and bonuses thanks to their political cohorts in Congress. These same elected officials need to do a better job of explaining their pledge to retain the Bush tax cuts and corporate tax loopholes in the midst of our trillion dollar deficit .Where are the promised private sector jobs that were supposed to trickle down from the Bush tax cuts for the rich? Why must the unfair burden of sacrifice be on the middle class and working poor who in essence have already been robbed of the American Dream while corporate America thrives and the unemployment rate continues to climb?  President Obama has stated that “… our economy as a whole just isn’t producing nearly enough jobs for everyone who’s looking.”  Just how long are we, the American people going to remain silent and allow corporate America and their elected cronies to destroy this country?

Let’s stop trying to be the global police force and bring our troops home so that we can focus on our  domestic wars against a failing economy, unemployment and all of the other social ills affecting just about everyone who does not have the good  fortune to be in the top 1% of U.S. wage earners.  Then, let’s roll up our sleeves and get down to the nitty gritty and start to speak up, speak out and change the direction and arrogance that has permeated, and as of late, dominated the political landscape of our United States of America.

Occupy Philly Activists Go to Trial, Maybe to Jail

By Michael Coard, 4/14/2012, news, opinion

On April 26, 2012, several defendants could be sent to prison for what they did outside a government facility on November 29th last year, prior to the police arriving and catching them in the act. Sounds like a gang of terrorists caught red-handed, doesn’t it? But words, like appearances, can be deceiving. These were no terrorists. And they weren’t gangsters either.…

NJ Weedman: “I refuse to be another John Ray Wilson”

Ed Forchion aka NJ Weedman, 4/25/2012, op-ed, news, politics

My Prosecution - On May 1st, 2012 I go on trial in Burlington County Superior Court before Judge Delehey. In most cases a defendant is told not to talk about the case, the facts and follow attorney advice to keep quiet. In my case I refuse to keep quiet, I’m telling the facts and I’m representing myself. While most defendants are afraid; I’m looking forward to…

Not Everyone With an Illegal Gun Deserves Jail Time

By Michael Coard, 4/14/2012, news, opinion

Most Philadelphians believe that violent crime is the city’s biggest problem. As a result, you might think severe punishment for anyone who illegally possesses a gun—regardless of whether the person committed a separate non-violent crime with it—is part of the solution. Mere unlawful possession, you’d argue, is enough to warrant mandatory imprisonment. No probation. No fine.…

In response to a FOIA request on the Devontae Sandford case by freedom activist Roberto Guzman, the Wayne Countyprosecutor’s office failed to turn over copies of all the taped confessions of then 14 yr-old Devontae Sanford. For now throw out the fact that Devontae had no legal counsel at the time the tapes were made.

Mr. Guzman who is also a para-legal and works on…
