Rep. Mel Watt and the 12th Congressional District of North Carolina take issue with Republican redistricting

Representative Mel Watt, who represents the 12th Congressional District of North Carolina that includes Charlotte, wants the district and others to remain virtually unchanged. Last week the North Carolina NAACP and NC Alliance of Black Elected Officials met to discuss the newly proposed district maps drawn up by Republicans. Representative Watt is listed as a signatory to a “Statement of Principle Regarding Redistricting” that came out of that meeting and released by the North Carolina NAACP on July 20.

A majority of African Americans voters from neighboring districts would be swept into the 12th Congressional District of North Carolina under the newly proposed district maps.  Earlier this month Representative Watt said Republicans “have gone out of their way to pack African American voters into the 12th district.” According to Representative Patrick McHenry, a Republican representing the 10th Congressional District of North Carolina, using race to draw new districts would result in huge gains for Republicans and that “no other states in the nation would gain as many Republican seats.”

Occupy Philly Activists Go to Trial, Maybe to Jail

By Michael Coard, 4/14/2012, news, opinion

On April 26, 2012, several defendants could be sent to prison for what they did outside a government facility on November 29th last year, prior to the police arriving and catching them in the act. Sounds like a gang of terrorists caught red-handed, doesn’t it? But words, like appearances, can be deceiving. These were no terrorists. And they weren’t gangsters either.…

Ed Forchion aka NJ Weedman, 4/25/2012, op-ed, news, politics

My Prosecution - On May 1st, 2012 I go on trial in Burlington County Superior Court before Judge Delehey. In most cases a defendant is told not to talk about the case, the facts and follow attorney advice to keep quiet. In my case I refuse to keep quiet, I’m telling the facts and I’m representing myself. Not Everyone With an Illegal Gun Deserves Jail Time

By Michael Coard, 4/14/2012, news, opinion

Most Philadelphians believe that violent crime is the city’s biggest problem. Mere unlawful possession, you’d argue, is enough to warrant mandatory imprisonment. No probation. No fine.…

For now throw out the fact that Devontae had no legal counsel at the time the tapes were made.

Mr. Guzman who is also a para-legal and works on…
