In 2004 when President Obama was running for the Senate, he told an audience at Northwestern University that he supported decriminalization of marijuana and said the Drug War was a failure.
In 2012 when several leaders of South American countries racked by violence from the US mandated drug war asked him to support legalization and/or decriminalization, President Obama said it was not the answer.
Why the flip-flop?
Did the Police and Prison Guard Unions get to him? Did Big Pharma lobbyist get him to change positions? Did the Private Prison corporations write a big check to his campaign for re-election? Did the drug money laundering banksters get him to bail on doing the right thing for the American people?
We do not know so we can only guess.
Candidate Obama presented views that represented change; President Obama has given us more of the same failed Drug Policy that he knows does not work and is bankrupting our country and fueling violence around the Globe.
Recently President Obama said he does not get enough credit from right wing media on his willingness to cut Medicaid and Social Security. While social programs for those in need are on the chopping block, President Obama's 2013 Budget increases funding for building new facilities to imprison more non-violent so-called drug offenders.
It is immoral to cut funding for much needed programs like the Minority Business Development Agency while funding a global expansion of the Drug War.
If President Obama has the power to tell ICE to stop deporting undocumented immigrants and give them job permits, if he can cut funding and shut down all five regional Minority Business Development centers, he certainly has the power to cut funding for the Drug War.
Tell the President that this was not the change you voted for and to End the Drug War now!
