Oakland Cop Shoots Unarmed 22 Yr Old In Back And Kills Him - Caught On Video

Whether or not the police officer meant to shoot this young man in the back as some are claiming is irrelevant, there was no reason to pull a gun out on a person lying face down on the ground being pinned by other officers.

Mecury News writes:

OAKLAND — A BART police officer struggling to handcuff a 22-year-old man, stood up over the facedown Hayward resident and fired a single shot into his back while a handful of officers watched, a video taken by a train passenger apparently shows.

The attorney for the family of Oscar Grant III, fatally shot by an unidentified BART officer early New Year's Day, said Sunday he plans to file a $25 million lawsuit against the department and asked prosecutors to consider filing murder charges against the officer.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday after five officers responded to the Fruitvale station to reports of a fight on a train, officials said, though they have not confirmed whether Grant
was involved in the fight.

There are unconfirmed reports that after the shooting, officers tried to confiscate all cell phone cameras from witnesses and passengers. However, a few videos have surfaced with one witness stating that she tried to contact the police to make her video available for the police investigation. Apparently she was not contacted and she is offering to make the video available to the victim's family. In the news interview, Karina Vargass states that the victim was being cooperative with police and he can be seen on his knees raising his hands pleading with officers. He was then thrown to the ground face down with officers putting knees in his back. The news anchor says in the televised report that the victim was struggling but when you are pinned down with officers man-handling you, naturally your body is going to react to pain.

I have stated many times that we have to use technology to combat police brutality and excessive force. We must gather the evidence needed to prevent cover-ups. We must become our brother's keeper and stop acting like these things have nothing to do with us unless we are directly affected. It might not be you this time, but it might be you the next time or one of your family members. When police offices come into our neighborhoods we must observe them and video tape their actions. Whether it is to show them doing wrong or whether it is to show they did everything right to prevent loss of life, we must stop being passive an start organizing. I'm sure the family of the victim are thankful for the witnesses who made this video available. They are to be commended

Occupy Philly Activists Go to Trial, Maybe to Jail

By Michael Coard, 4/14/2012, news, opinion

On April 26, 2012, several defendants could be sent to prison for what they did outside a government facility on November 29th last year, prior to the police arriving and catching them in the act. Sounds like a gang of terrorists caught red-handed, doesn’t it? But words, like appearances, can be deceiving. These were no terrorists. And they weren’t gangsters either.…

NJ Weedman: “I refuse to be another John Ray Wilson”

Ed Forchion aka NJ Weedman, 4/25/2012, op-ed, news, politics

My Prosecution - On May 1st, 2012 I go on trial in Burlington County Superior Court before Judge Delehey. In most cases a defendant is told not to talk about the case, the facts and follow attorney advice to keep quiet. In my case I refuse to keep quiet, I’m telling the facts and I’m representing myself. While most defendants are afraid; I’m looking forward to…

Not Everyone With an Illegal Gun Deserves Jail Time

By Michael Coard, 4/14/2012, news, opinion

Most Philadelphians believe that violent crime is the city’s biggest problem. As a result, you might think severe punishment for anyone who illegally possesses a gun—regardless of whether the person committed a separate non-violent crime with it—is part of the solution. Mere unlawful possession, you’d argue, is enough to warrant mandatory imprisonment. No probation. No fine.…

Black Talk Radio News, 4/13/2012, news,

In response to a FOIA request on the Devontae Sandford case by freedom activist Roberto Guzman, the Wayne Countyprosecutor’s office failed to turn over copies of all the taped confessions of then 14 yr-old Devontae Sanford. For now throw out the fact that Devontae had no legal counsel at the time the tapes were made.

Mr. Guzman who is also a para-legal and works on…
