NC Tea Party Republicans suffer court setback in defunding education attempts

Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard E. Manning Jr. issued an order Monday that impacts 200 at risk children in Mecklenburg County and thousands across the state. At issue is the funding of the pre-kindergarten program “More at Four”and the state budget cuts put forth by Republicans. In the order Judge Manning wrote "Simply put, it is the duty of the State of North Carolina to protect each and every one of these at-risk and defenseless children, and to provide them their lawful opportunity, through a quality pre-kindergarten program, to take advantage of their equal opportunity to obtain a sound basic education as guaranteed by the North Carolina constitution."

Several independent studies over ten years confirmed that North Carolina’s award winning More at Four pre-kindergarten program improved the academic performance of children from low income disadvantaged families. The UNC-Chapel Hill FPG Child Development Institute in its study wrote “poor children who attended More at Four performed better than their peers who did not attend More at Four.”

Occupy Philly Activists Go to Trial, Maybe to Jail

By Michael Coard, 4/14/2012, news, opinion

On April 26, 2012, several defendants could be sent to prison for what they did outside a government facility on November 29th last year, prior to the police arriving and catching them in the act. Sounds like a gang of terrorists caught red-handed, doesn’t it? But words, like appearances, can be deceiving. These were no terrorists. And they weren’t gangsters either.…

Ed Forchion aka NJ Weedman, 4/25/2012, op-ed, news, politics

My Prosecution - On May 1st, 2012 I go on trial in Burlington County Superior Court before Judge Delehey. In most cases a defendant is told not to talk about the case, the facts and follow attorney advice to keep quiet. In my case I refuse to keep quiet, I’m telling the facts and I’m representing myself. While most defendants are afraid; I’m looking forward to…

Not Everyone With an Illegal Gun Deserves Jail Time

By Michael Coard, 4/14/2012, news, opinion

Most Philadelphians believe that violent crime is the city’s biggest problem. Mere unlawful possession, you’d argue, is enough to warrant mandatory imprisonment. No probation. No fine.…

For now throw out the fact that Devontae had no legal counsel at the time the tapes were made.

Mr. Guzman who is also a para-legal and works on…
