Black Facts In History - Thomas L Jennings - Judy W Reed - The African Free School - Bessie Coleman

Thomas L. Jennings was the first African-American to receive a patent in 1821. It was for a dry-cleaning process in 1821. He used the money earned from the patent to purchase relatives out of slavery and support abolitionist causes. In 1831, he became assistant secretary for the First Annual Convention of the People of Color in Philadelphia, PA.

Judy W. Reed was the first African-American woman to receive a patent in 1884 for a hand-operated machine used to knead and roll dough.


The African Free School in New York City was the first free school for African-Americans. It was started by the abolitionist group the New York Manumission Society in 1787. It was founded to provide education to children of slaves and free blacks. The school graduated some significant alumnae, most notably Dr. James McCune Smith. Smith was the first African-American person to earn a medical degree, and widely-believed to be first African-American person in the United States to run a pharmacy. He was also the first African-American to practice medicine in the World. Another notable alumnus was Ira Aldridge, the "most famous black actor of the nineteenth century" Henry Highland Garnet, a prominent seafarer and abolitionist also graduated from African Free School, though he was born a slave. Alexander Crummell was another prominent abolitionist, as well as a minister, to graduate from the school.


Bessie Coleman, Popularly known as "Queen Bess", was the first licensed African-American pilot in the world. She was also the first American of any race or gender to hold an international pilot license. In 1915, at the age of twenty-three, Coleman moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she lived with her brothers and where she worked at the White Sox Barber Shop as a manicurist. There she heard tales of the world from pilots who were returning home from World War I. They told stories about flying in the war, and Coleman started to fantasize about being a pilot. Her brother used to tease her by commenting that French women were better than African-American women because French women were pilots already.She would later travel to France where she received her aviation instruction because American Flight schools would take neither blacks or women.
