The family of slain North Carolina teen Phylicia Barnes who was killed in 2010 while visiting relatives in Baltimore, Maryland is speaking out along with other families who have lost a loved one to senseless violence. Barnes alleged killer, Michael Johnson was a family friend who has been charged and will go to trial in August.
Daphne Alston who lost here son in 2008, a murder yet to be solved, arranged a picnic on Sunday in which members of the Barnes family participated. Alston has worked on the issue hoping to raise awareness, spark conversation and implement solutions.
“When people leave here, we want them to go back and start committees in the communities, volunteer in schools and rec centers so we can reclaim our communities and this is especially to the black community because we are way behind with our children,” Alston said. “We made it through slavery, we made it through the crack-cocaine era, and now, we need to make it through the senseless killing of our young men and women.”
